Flake System Details

What Is a Flake System Floor Coating?

A flake system — also called a vinyl flake or chip floor coating — is a multi-layer concrete coating that combines a durable base coat, decorative vinyl flakes, and a tough topcoat sealer. The flakes are broadcast into the wet base coat, then locked in place with a clear protective finish.

The result is a floor that's attractive, seamless, slip-resistant, and built to handle real-world use. It's one of the most popular concrete coating systems we install across Indianapolis and Hamilton County — and for good reason.

Is a Flake System Right for Your Space?

Flake system coatings are an excellent fit for spaces that need both durability and a clean, finished appearance. We most commonly install them in:

  • Residential garages — resists vehicle traffic, oil, road salt, and hot tire pickup while transforming the look of the space

  • Commercial and retail spaces — professional appearance, easy to clean, holds up in high-foot-traffic environments

  • Showrooms and service areas — seamless surface with a polished, branded look that makes a strong first impression

If your floor takes a beating and you want it to look good doing it, a flake system is worth a serious look.

How Our Flake System Installation Works

Step 1 — Surface Preparation
Every lasting floor coating starts with proper prep. We grind the concrete surface to open the pores of the slab and ensure a strong mechanical bond. This is the step that separates coatings that last from ones that chip, peel and flake.

Step 2 — Base Coat Application
We apply a high-performance base coat — epoxy or polyurea/polyaspartic depending on your space, usage, and conditions. Each system has distinct advantages, and we'll recommend the right one for your project.

Step 3 — Flake Broadcast
Vinyl flakes are hand-broadcast into the wet base coat at full coverage. You choose from a range of colors and blends to match your space and style. We keep the selection process simple — we'll show you your options and help you choose with confidence.

Step 4 — Topcoat Sealer
Once the base coat cures, we apply a clear, durable polyaspartic topcoat that locks in the flakes, adds slip resistance, and protects the system from UV exposure, abrasion, staining, and daily wear.

Step 5 — Final Walkthrough
We inspect the floor with you before we call it done. Every edge, every corner, every seam.

Flake Systems: What You Should Know

How long does a flake system floor coating last?
A properly installed flake system with a quality topcoat lasts decades in residential settings. Commercial floors with heavier traffic may need topcoat maintenance sooner. Proper prep and quality materials are the biggest factors in longevity.

What's the difference between epoxy and polyurea/polyaspartic base coats?
Epoxy offers superior bond strength, hardness and thickness and is a proven, cost-effective base coat for most applications. Polyurea and polyaspartic systems cure faster, are more flexible, and offer superior UV stability. We assess your space and recommend the right system — we don't push one over the other unless it genuinely makes sense for your floor. Whatever your choice for the base coat - we always use a polyaspartic topcoat for long lasting appearance and color stability.

Can a flake system be installed over existing coatings or paint?
Some might say yes - but at Indy Floor Coating, we will always adequately prep your floor through mechanical diamond grinding to ensure the best possible chemical adhesion for the strongest, longest lasting coating.

How long does installation take?
Most residential garage projects are completed in one to two days. Commercial floors vary by size. We'll give you a clear timeline upfront so you can plan accordingly.

How soon can I use the floor after installation?
Light foot traffic is generally safe within 24 hours. Vehicle traffic and full use should wait 48 to 72 hours. We'll give you specific guidance based on the system installed.

Do you serve areas outside Indianapolis?
Yes. We serve Indianapolis and communities throughout Hamilton County, including Carmel, Fishers, Noblesville, Westfield, and Zionsville, as well as Boone and Hancock Counties.

Our Flake System Process

See how we install a long-lasting flake floor.

1. Preparation

Our highly skilled technicians evaluate the concrete surface for moisture content, damage, and density. We then mechanically grind all surfaces with a diamond grinder to the ideal profile recommended by the ICRI (International Concrete Repair Institute). This creates a porous and contaminant-free surface to ensure proper adhesion of our coating.

2. Concrete Repairs

All cracks, pitting, and imperfections are repaired with a flexible, elastomeric coating, and a moisture mitigation primer is then applied, if conditions indicate.

3. Decorative Flake System Coating Application

Upgrade and protect your floor with a stunning mix of color and texture. With every flake system we apply, decorative vinyl paint flakes are broadcast into a coated surface for beauty, durability and performance. Choose from a variety of colors to compliment your space.

4. Detailing & Clear Coating

In this final step, the floor is sanded, and a protective Ultra UV clear coat or polyaspartic topcoat is applied to prevent fading, cracking, or peeling and to protect your surface. We add aggregate to the topcoat to create better traction and a non-slip surface.
